A 2.25 in. wooden Tyrolean couple can be seen inside this house plaque. They were originally made to be a lapel pin and hung together on a chain attached to a safety pin. Their arms and legs are peg jointed. The house (circa 1950) is marked, “This Plaque is a Genuine Hand Carved Item made in the Italian Alps.”

Swedish Wooden Dolls
Could these three jolly 7 in. wood elves be Santa’s helpers on the day after Christmas? They are staying cozy in their knitted outfits after a job well done. A tag on their foot reads “Made in Sweden.”
Polish Wooden Dolls
These 7.5 in. wooden dolls were made in Poland during the 1970’s or earlier. They have elastic strung joints, flax hair, painted features, and molded painted shoes. A gold tag on the shoe reads “Made in Poland.” Their clothing is sewn on, not to be removed.
Mama and Papa Mecki
Mama Mecki gets rewarded for her sweeping. Papa Mecki offers a bouquet.

Dr. Mecki is tending an infant in the cradle-rocking chair. Note the ladder to the loft. I furnished the room.

The Mecki cook has just finished making fried eggs. I furnished the room in Tudor style, including the crocheted rug.
Meckis Doll House
While looking for a home for my 3 in. Meckis, I found this Tudor style dollhouse at the fleamarket. The tag on the Mekis gave the following background. “In an old German fable, the Mecki through craftiness, logic, and shrewdness was able to defeat his natural enemy, the Fox. Even today each Mecki is created by hand with tenderness and care.”
Hedgehog Dolls
Besides trolls from Scandanavia, hedgehogs from Germany were introduced circa 1950. Some, known as Meckis were made by the German Steiff toy company. The smaller 4.5 in. all-vinyl Mecki is unmarked. I made the crocheted skirt. The 9.5 in. hiker Mecki, also unmarked, has a vinyl head, felt hands, plastic shoes, and a wired cloth covered body. He carries a plastic Alpine bouquet. The 7 in. dwarf of felt who is looking on was made in Switzerland.
Sebino Doll
This is not a Furga doll although it was made in Italy. She is a 16 in. Sebino doll who resembles my daughter-in-law, Donna. Just change her eyes to brown.
Over the Top?
“Over the top!” you might think, looking at the 19 in. Furga in the marabou trimmed pink velvet outfit. Underneath she wears a hooped petticoat that makes her un-crushable. Can you identify her?
